Every hairstylist remember the moment they became intrigued with hair and also the passion for creativity it inspires. The storyline was no different for U.S. Marine Corps veteran Kristyl Rodrigues who discovered her adoration for hair while enrolled at Bellus Academy’s school of cosmetology in Poway, California. There Kristyl was studying cosmetology and pursuing a specialist beauty education. The start: Inspiration Can Strike Anywhere
Kristyl joined the Marine Corps in 2014 and was enlisted with the chronilogical age of 19. Her first duty station was at Okinawa, Japan, accompanied by an industry operation in Korea. Every Sunday during Kristyl’s time in Korea, a barber would look at the site and provide haircuts on the Marines. But, this happened: “I what food was in a tent doing my personal hair,” shares Kristyl. “I definitely do shape ups and line ups for me, nothing too crazy, when I stood a Marine Sergeant reach me and get me for any haircut. I’d never cut anybody’s hair before but I jumped right into it and that he found themselves loving it…and along with his outreach and leadership, literally the next day, I needed 13 Marines prearranged for me personally.”
Here is the first moment that Kristyl considered barbering like a future career-she chosen charging $5 a haircut understanding that maybe it was. Which has a strong intrinsic motivation and entrepreneurial spirit, she worked overnight shifts on guard duty from 12a.m. to 8a.m., then cut hair in the days. What Kristyl learned was profound: Hairdressers touch more hearts than heads every time you service a client, there’s impact.
The outcome of the Haircut
“As a Marine, the standards for appearance have reached an all-time high. The uniform must be squared away and ironed. Everything has to be flush, measured properly-there’s a great deal of attention to detail,” shares Kristyl. “I was investigating Marines from top to bottom. It tore up my heart because we’re the optimum people with this nation and that we must be walking around as a result. That’s the location where the impact over the internet and heart originated, i dreamed of being able to transmit that through my hands to the people around me…and have them walk around feeling proud and good from top, and representing this nation consequently.”
Similarities Operating: Military & Barbering
After getting back from service, Kristyl asked herself just what the next challenge and chapter in their life can be. That’s when she chose to pursue her education as being a barber at Bellus Academy. Learning from her very own past and excited, she found many similarities in their own service and becoming a barber.
