Once you take into consideration Nepal, whitewater Rafting and Kayaking are not the initial items that spring into mind, at least it was not personally. Much more likely images of Kathmandu, rice paddies, Everest and the mysterious Himalaya pop into your head. To help you imagine my surprise once i got a chance to Nepal and finished up rafting and kayaking well over Much!
When you turn up in Thamel or Pokhara (the primary touristy area’s in Nepal) you’ll find travel companies all over the place, and I immediately decided rafting was something I had to do in my time in Nepal. The first decision to create is which river to be. Nepal offers many of the worlds best rivers, starting from a gently flowing river with a of the fiercest whitewater on the globe. So according to your experience and thirst for adrenaline, there’s most definitely something for everyone! The very best times to travel are between March-June or September-October; although trips will run throughout the year the river will be at its highest, fastest, and a lot exhilarating over these months.
Picking a company to go with can be a bit tricky though! There are numerous travel companies lining the streets, however, choosing one between your other is practically impossible…Each of them offer virtually the identical prices, nearly the exact same trips and promise local plumber of your life! However there are a lot of companies on the market, it is a shame to convey which might be right after your cash. You will need to discover a registered company who have safety measures in place. I finished up using GRG’s Adventure Kayaking. Having met Maila, the organization owner, several times around Thamel I trusted that they would deliver what he promised, and after doing some research I discovered he is the best Kayaker in Nepal, having only won the Himalayan Championship for your second time, I felt I had created made the correct decision and will be in safe hands.
Your journey on the river was amazing in itself. Coming out of the valley you are greeted by a more traditional life-style. Women working in the rice paddies within their saris, looking more glamorous than I could ever achieve! Children carrying their books on their own heads walking over the highway to high school; Gorgeous mountains without anyone’s knowledge; Random Buffalo dotted throughout the scene to mention only a few things we saw on our journey on the river. After Two hours of staring hypnotised out your window we arrived at a little village ready for all your rafting needs. There was clearly a smaller shed (just like the one you can think of Mary and Joseph stumbling upon! ) to get changed in, toilets, tea, biscuits, water, all you want before you start per day on the river!
When going to the beginning point, I realised I’d made the very best decision in picking GRG’s. There were about 20 rafts prearranged and waiting to match various companies and ours was alone with any safety kayakers. You can see where GRG’s got their logo ‘SAFETY FIRST’ from!
Which is it, Maila and also the team got all of us suited and booted in your life jackets, helmets, (with respect to the weather, splash jackets were available) and after a really informative safety talk we were off! Immediately greeted by our first rapid, aptly named ‘Good Morning’ as that first splash in your face and down your T-Shirt definitely wakes you up!
