It is first important to know that Central Asia has a more relaxed attitude to Islam than its neighbors in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Central Asia is a Muslim area so it is important to be cautious in certain areas. T-shirts and shorts that are long are acceptable for males and females in the cities, but if visiting any active mosques everyone should wear trousers that are below the knee, and tops that cover shoulders. The use of a head scarf is suggested for women. The tour takes us to remote places that are not usually frequented by tourists. Locals wear modest clothing, therefore it is probable that you will feel more comfortable in conservative clothing.

Language & Religion

Tajik is the official dialect of Tajikistan. Russian is still widely used for business and communication.

The majority of the people adhere to Sunni Islam, with the minority of them following Russian Orthodox, Catholicism, Buddhism and Judaism.

Food and drink

The tour is focused on soups and other meats. In the remote and higher altitude places vegetables can be difficult to come by. There are plenty of dried fruit and nuts to sample.

The choices for alcohol are limited to beer and vodka. Anyone who wants to experiment with something different, such as Scotch or Gin is advised to purchase the alcohol duty-free and bring it along. Mixer drinks like tonic waters can be difficult to locate, however.
