Tourists visiting Tajikistan do not need to get immunized. However, they should be vaccinated in Tetanus and Typhoid and Polio, Hepatitis A and Polio. Malaria can also be seen in Tajikistan and it’s an excellent idea to talk to your doctor local for advice on immunisations.

Cultural Sensitivity

While on our trips, you will often meet local people who have their own unique customs and traditions. We ask you to be respectful and considerate towards the local population. You can always rely on your tour-leaders or guides to help you.

The first thing to note about travel in Central Asia is that most areas, specifically the towns and cities, have a much more laid-back attitude to Islam than their neighbours to the south of Afghanistan and Pakistan. It is an Muslim region, so it’s important to be cautious in specific areas. Although both women and men can wear T-shirts and shorts in urban areas, they should not wear T-shirts with long sleeves. However, anyone who is visiting active mosques should wear trousers which are lower than the knees as well as tops that cover the shoulders. Ladies should also wear the headscarf. On this trip, we will be going to remote areas that are not frequently frequented by tourists. The locals are modest when it comes to dressing, and it is expected that you’ll feel comfortable in conservative clothing.

Language and Religion

Tajik is the official language of Tajikistan. Russian is still used regularly in business and communications.

The majority of people are followers of Sunni Islam. A small percentage of people follow the religions of Russian Orthodox, Catholicism and Buddhism.

Food and drinks

This tour concentrates on meats and soups. There are a few vegetables that are difficult to locate in remote areas or in higher elevations. However, there’s a lot of dried fruit and nuts are available to try.

The options for alcohol are limited to beer and vodka. If you want to try something different – like Scotch or Gin is advised to purchase the item duty-free and take it along. Mixer drinks like tonic waters can be difficult to locate, however.
