Every hairstylist remember the moment they became attracted to hair along with the desire for creativity who’s inspires. The storyplot wasn’t any different for U.S. Marine Corps veteran Kristyl Rodrigues who discovered her adoration for hair while enrolled at Bellus Academy’s school of cosmetology in Poway, California. There Kristyl was studying cosmetology and pursuing a professional beauty education. In her story, there’s a valuable message that can be shared. “It doesn’t matter in places you begin or how you begin. I want to have the ability to spark that passion into people where we’re creating this industry significantly better, we’re studying under our history and we’re continuing that legacy,” shared Kristyl. The following is her story.
The Beginning: Inspiration Can Strike Anywhere
Kristyl joined the Marine Corps in 2014 and it was enlisted on the age of 19. Her first duty station was at Okinawa, Japan, followed by an area operation in Korea. Every Sunday during Kristyl’s amount of time in Korea, a barber would check out the site and provide haircuts for the Marines. However, this happened: “I was at a tent doing my personal hair,” shares Kristyl. “I would just do shape ups and line ups personally, nothing too crazy, while i had a Marine Sergeant reach me and enquire of me for the haircut. I had created never cut anybody’s hair before but I jumped right into it anf the husband found themselves loving it…and regarding his outreach and leadership, literally in the morning, I had created 13 Marines prearranged for me.”
This is the first moment that Kristyl considered barbering like a future career-she settled on charging $5 a haircut which maybe it was. Using a strong intrinsic motivation and entrepreneurial spirit, she worked overnight shifts on guard duty from 12a.m. to 8a.m., then cut hair during the days. What Kristyl learned was profound: Hairdressers touch more hearts than heads each time you service a customer, there’s impact.
The effect of an Haircut
“As a Marine, the standards for appearance are in an all-time high. The uniform has to be squared away and ironed. Everything has to be flush, measured properly-there’s a lot of attention to detail,” shares Kristyl. “I was looking at Marines from head to toe. It tore up my heart because we’re the finest people of the nation so we should be walking around as such. That’s the place that the impact over the internet and heart originated, and that i thought about being able to transmit that through my hands to the people around me…and have them walk around feeling proud and good from top to bottom, and representing this nation consequently.”
Similarities In Service: Military & Barbering
After coming back from service, Kristyl asked herself exactly what the next challenge and chapter in her own life will be. That’s when she made a decision to pursue her education being a barber at Bellus Academy. Gaining knowledge through her own background and anticipating, she found many similarities in their service and serving as a barber.
