Shooting a shotgun is really as much mental warfare as it is fundamentals. Last Saturday my brother, my father, my two oldest sons, i visited the skeet range. We chose to shoot a round of trap considering that the skeet range was packed. All of us, except Dad, we hadn’t shot trap before. It looked simple enough, actually I thought I’d be excellent at it. WRONG, I hit the first and missed the following 10. My friend, who shoots sporting clay tournaments, shot 12 beyond 25. I finished up tied with my 14 yr old at 6 of 25. Embarrassing, to say the least. While i started missing it absolutely was over, I began riding the targets, closing one eye and absolutely fell apart. I had changed chokes from improved to modified before we started, so in my mind that’s the problem. I changed back after going 2 of 15 and take care of 4 of 10 by having an improved cylinder, very little better. It had not been the choke, it had been my brain that got during my way. It occurs on the skeet range along with the dove fields, and is difficult to overcome. Below are great tips in order to avoid a mental breakdown.
Take the mind off missing. Recall the video Tin Cup? Kevin Costner was starting to heat up to experience in the biggest golf tournament he previously ever took part in. The normally calm Costner couldn’t hit an upright shot to save his life. He kept shanking the ball down the line of other golfers and the more he achieved it, the more severe it got. His caddy and number of years friend made him turn his hat around backwards, pull his pockets really well etc. etc., then made him hit the ball again. If we do resistance, Costner made it happen and low and behold he hit his next drive perfect. Even if this would be a movie, there exists some truth there. If you’re able to do something that can the mind off missing you’ve got much better potential for overcoming it. Turn your hat around, bring your glasses off, make a move different simply to take your mind out of the fact you happen to be sucking it up. Keep positive, negativity is the enemy.

A side note for the skeet outing is the fact that my Ten year old made fantastic progress for just his 2nd time shooting. He only shot 2 the very first time, and just hit one shooting trap so his confidence is at the toilet. Because he began to shoot skeet I became worried, but he hit 1 beyond 4 on the first station and that was every one of the confidence he needed. He shot 10 for twenty five (using a 410), including both of them on the last station (the hardest station).
