I thought about scripting this post on band promotion because I have often heard new bands and struggling musicians wishing they were more paying gigs. Finding a paying gig is a useful one, I am talking about… you spend considerable time, energy and in many cases cash on getting your act together.. rehearsing, touring rehearsals and gigs (gas is usually a pain in case you travel by car), buying your gear, etc. But receiving payment gigs for brand new acts can be quite difficult.

While I believe it is great to obtain paid, I do not mean to convey think about a band as a business. A few things i am saying is, it might be practical to a minimum of have your costs covered.

Needless to say, that would depend on both you and your reasons why you are in a band to begin with.

Some bands want to play; love playing; believe playing and achieving their music out there is the better compensation there is certainly… along with the return of these acquisition of effort, time and expense is always that chance to get up there and PLAY. In addition there are others who work towards a long-term goal like building their particular following and achieving their music across for many years.

The reasons why it’s, virtually sums it down.

But, in case you desired to get paying gigs, here are a few things you can do.

1. Develop Your product or service

Occasionally I stumbled upon a client who struggles with promoting their products or services, and hang in several effort simply to get minimal results. The main reason is, they haven’t yet managed to accurately develop, define and refine their product, which explains why aggressively promoting something mediocre will always yield mediocre results.

So what exactly is your products or services? This guitar rock band, as well as your music. The true secret question for you is how will you set yourself independent of the rest. What exactly is it you accomplish that is unique, or the gender chart you can do better than all the others?

“What do you need website visitors to remember and LIKE you for?”

2. Define Your Music/Repertoire

Repertoire defines what type of band you’re. It also defines who your audience is. I really believe writing and recording original materials are great because by having your own music you create a good point that others will not have. It can be that final amount a collaborative creative effort that music news BUT, will not guarantee success, since to your band to become successfully famous for your own music, you would first should attract viewers that gets to hear and be thankful.

On the same note, as a cover band does not necessarily mean you cannot get paying gigs. There are tons of canopy bands which will get paid well for small bar gigs or perhaps major events.

What it is dependant on may be the novelty of the band, as well as your draw. Novelty is always that something with regards to you that people will want to come see; as well as your draw may be the size of the bunch you can gather at your gigs.

3. Market Yourself

You would need to sell you to ultimately people that you imagine would thank you for band and what you are offering. You can find basically two types of people you would like to market to; you can find the people who you want coming to your gigs and appreciating your own music, along with the those people who are capable to hire you for gigs.

This will actually be the classic “the chicken or egg scenario”, that you actually grow your audience and acquire more exposure when you are playing more gigs, but to get additional gigs you got to obtain invited or hired by people who’ve help for making gigs happen.

Nonetheless it need not be complicated. You need to simply do both at the same time.

Networking is key. The more people you get to meet, the more contacts you establish, the closer you get to your goals.

4. Management / Representation

You must have a manager. A professional figure which team you trust and count on to dedicate yourself to nothing less than the success and well-being of the band.

A manager needs to be a tenacious businessman. He’s a negotiator, understands marketing, and above all he believes within the product he could be entrusted with. His main goal is to sustain and develop further the product or service he manages.

Developing a manager may have several advantages, and one of the items I see managers being able to do that bands that manage themselves cannot, is be objective. The manager sees a thing that individual members within a band do not see, this runs specifically true when some members of the group develop egos that cloud their judgment. Members have a tendency to get tunnel vision and may not respond well with other people’s opinions that will not be flattering, a manager knows if criticisms are valid and take these not emotionally but objectively.

A manager is both part of the group and outsider; a part because he in concert with the group to attain their goals. He’s an outsider who can make rational decisions and in many cases be critical of the group whether it fails to get results what their audience expects.

Musicians is often one of the most stubborn of men and women, along with the least receptive to criticism, along with a trusted opinion from a specialist figure may help the group work to better the product or service. Remember that the manager is first and foremost a businessman, anf the husband runs the group because it is “profitable”… the better to showcase a band, the more money it makes, the more money the manager makes at the same time.

Managers should be very aggressive and protracted, a friend of mine (a manager for a huge act) once explained an account about how she approached bar after bar simply to get denied every time and was given all sorts of reasons and excuses. She never quit, and failed to give up on her band… today that band is a major recording artist… and in actual fact they have been big for a while now.
